The following AWARD is announced, MAJER, OTTO 251-46-7404 SP4 11B20 Co B, 1st Bn, 61st Inf (WAN4 SO) APO 96477 Awarded: Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device (First Oak Leaf Cluster) Date of action: 3 April 1970 Theater: Republic of Vietnam Authority: By direction of the President under provisions of Executive Order 13.046, 24 August 1962 Reason: For heroism in connection with ground operations against a hostile Force in the Republic of Vietnam: Specialist Four Majer distin- guished himself by valorous actions while serving as a sniper for Company B, 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 61st Infantry, on 3 April 1970. That day Company B had maneuvered across a hill in northern Quang Tri Province and established a defensive position on the hillside when they started to receive rocket and mortar fire. Company A was positioned approximately 500 meters to the front of Company B and was also receiving hostile mortar fire. Specialist Majer scanned the surrounding hills with his sniper scope and Located the enemy mortar tube, some 800 meters away, that was viciously pounding Company A's position. Specialist Majer braved hostile indirect fire to position himself in an exposed area in order to fire into the mortar site. With profound expertise Specialist Majer shot and hit both enemy gunners and knocked the mortar tube over. His timely and efficient action prevented fur- ther enemy fire and undoubtedly reduced casualties. Specialist Majer's courage and professionalism is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great cre- dit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
