From:Darin Feller-RaidersUFCfan@aol.com

Comments:SGT Darin Feller. HHC 1/61st INF. Panama 1989. We were sitting around the TOC and names were going around until we put them together and came up with the name Nimrod Dancer for the mission.
We had so much fun there, sneaking out of the armed sites to party and meet the locals. Went fishing a lot, scuba, boating trips, jungle training... We caught enough peacock bass to feed our unit and those staying with us in the bubble tents. Of course the chow hall was closed and everyone was informed where they were caught, etc but it was a huge great day of fun... and the locals were great... Never saw a chubby person around...

Comments:MY NAME IS SSGT JIM MC DONALD (RET).
I WAS WITH B TROOP 3/5 CAV VIETNAM 70-71.
I AM TRYING TO LOCATE A PERSON THAT WAS IN C 1/61 IN VIETNAM 70-71. HE WAS A MEDIC AND HIS NAME WAS BYRON C. BABCOCK. HE WAS FROM OKLAHOMA CITY. I HAVE SEARCHED FOR HIM IN OK AND CANNOT FIND ANYONE BY THAT NAME.
I HAVE HIS BILLFOLD. I GOT IT FROM AN ARVN THAT WAS RIDING MY APC OVER CLOSE TO THE BORDER WHEN THEY WERE MAKING A PUSH IN TO LAOS DURING LAM SON 719. HE TRADED IT TO ME FOR A KNIFE. I JUST STUFFED IT IN MY BOX AND KEPT IT FOR A WHILE ON THE 806 TRACK. THEN I MOVED OVER TO A DIFFERENT TRACK TO BE THE DRIVER. MONTHS LATER I FOUND IT WHEN WE WERE CLEANING OUT THE TRACK SO I MAILED IT HOME TO MY PARENTS TO SEND IT TO BYRON'S HOME ADDRESS..... THEY COULDN'T LOCATE ANYONE AT THE ADDRESS SO THEY JUST KEPT IT. WHEN I WAS CLEANING OUT THEIR HOUSE IN '94 AFTER MY MOM PASSED AWAY, I FOUND IT IN MY OLD ROOM DRESSER DRAWER.
NOW I'M TRYING TO FIND HIM. SINCE HE WAS A MEDIC IN VIETNAM HE MAY HAVE MOVED AWAY TO WORK IN A HOSPITAL SOMEWHERE.
I WAS ON THE 806 APC WITH A GUY NAMED ANDY ANDREWS AND CRUMP. THEY WERE MECHANICS IN C 1/61. THEY WERE ATTACHED TO B TROOP 3/5 CAV DURING LOM SON 719 THEN THEY WENT BACK TO THEIR UNIT IN MARCH '71.

From: Tony Ford-supermanrayhd@hotmail.com

Comments:Hi there. I'm a wife of a Vietnam Vet. He left from Ft. Carson CO, 5th ID Finance Division to Vietnam and served in 1969. Returned to the US on a flight via Alaska and then to San Francisco in 1970.
He has mentioned the names of two he remembers. Any suggestions on how to find them? His 60th B-Day is in November and I'm hoping to reconnect them or give him some info.
    1. Rich Piskerich (spelling?? Pis-CARE-itch is the pronunciation. It is a Polish name if that helps in getting a correct spelling. He was an E-6 SSgt.) Rich left on the plane ONE DAY ahead of my husband and he's never seen/heard from him.
    2. Carl Byrd..probably a Specialist. Carl went to Quang Tri.
He remembers them both being originally from Pennsylvania.
My husband's name is Ray K. Ford. Just Ray. Not Raymond.
Any help/direction/website would be greatly appreciated. I have no idea where to start. He has no momentos/pictures/anything.

Comments:My name is Roy Martin 69
I came to Fort Carson from FT. Leonard wood Basic Training In April 1962 and was assigned to 1st Platoon C Company 1/61. Just found your site and really appreciate your work. Most of my friends were discharged in Dec. 1963 and never went to Vietnam. I love reading the stories from the guys who did go. Several of our NCOs went to Nam. A Sgt. Thornton and a Sgt. Sergeant to recall a few. One writer mentioned a Sgt. Batten who I believe did not go. I know we spent a lot of time in the mountains. Tarryall comes to mind. Also Swift Strike 1 and 2 and the trip to Yakima, WA. in spring of 1963. Also many 3 day field problems. This doesn't sound like much to the troops who actually saw action but it just wasn't our time. We were very well trained at the end of our enlistment.
It's a time and place I will never forget.

From:Frank Poniatowski -fpony155@yahoo.com

Comments:I just found you re web site and could not believe the memories it brought back. I was in Recon Plt from June 1969 till Feb 1970. I arrived at LZ Sharon and was sent to Khe Sahn, a really bad place to start my experience in Nam. My first night there I was sent out on a listening post and was scared out of my mind. We picked up movement and made our way back to the wire and had to climb over it because they would not open it [cut myself up pretty bad]. That night we killed two sappers and found their bodies the next day.We left Khe Sahn in July and went back to LZ Sharon and then to Cua Viet on the beach for awhile. They took us out of LZ Sharon and sent us to C2 and A4 [Con Thien] after that. I really hated A4, it was an old French post and over run with rats and it always seemed to rain. One night we had to go out into the DMZ and rescue a LERP Team that called for help. I drove the lead track with Sgt Kalhaggen on one of the most scariest rides I ever took.We did a lot of scouting and did mine sweep security between C2 and A4 for awhile. We hit a few land mines and I still remember seeing Mancha flying thru the air after his APC was hit in front of ours.We had a good group of guys,I went by the nickname of Pony because of long last name. I remember Mancha, Humphreyhs, Pee Wee, Chicken Man, Wild Bill, Hobday, Benson, Lanon, Lannen, Herrick, Gaglinano, Contee, Rigsby, Lt Hosfield, Sgt Mack, Jackson. I know I left a lot of names off but its been along time.

Comments:This past Veteran’s Day I spent in Paola and Parker Kansas, the home of Dennis Ross, He was a member of Alpha Company who was killed when they came in to help us (Bravo Company’s mortar platoon) that night in November. Because of the 1/61 website I was able to get in touch with his daughter and through another one, his niece and brother and sister-in-law.
This year I got the courage to go from New York to Kansas to visit them. I have never had such a rewarding trip in my life. I was nervous but they quickly put me at ease. I learned about his life and his family. I feel like I helped them and I know they helped me. I urge anyone else with similar circumstances to do the same. This was the best Veteran’s day of my life.
Dennis, you and your family will always be in my thoughts and in my heart. Tim Hurley

Comments:Hi, I am Jonas St Germain. I was at Fort Carson in the 5th Mech end of '66 and '67. In 1967 the Co. was sent to Nam. We went home for the 30 day leave, returned and started to process for overseas, all the shots and everything. I had a close friend Terrel, for whom I would read his letters from home. Well anyway after all the processing my name was not on the list to get on the plane. I was sent back to Carson, and in 2 weeks got new orders for Korea. I have heard my old company got run over and loss their Colors. If anyone knows of this or anybody that was there at that time, spring of 67 (April or May) please contact me at johnheboy@yahoo.com or write me Jonas St Germain 1114 F.J. Rd Apt #4 Crivitz,WI 54114
Thank you,

Jonas

Comments:May 10 Thirty-Eight years ago, I never knew exact date, just that it was about a month or so before I went home. Figured it out thru different links from and portions of this site.
A mine, maybe command detonated, went off under Nelson's flame track. Wade was the driver, Thomas the gunner. It was their first time out that day and Warren and his track were back for a load of napalm. I was going to go out for a "ride" with Nelson on his next trip. Strange thing was; that morning, before we went out, none of the kids came around. Nelson enjoyed the kids, he was the only one who had any. At the memorial service it was announced that all three received posthumous promotions.
Say the names of SSG Rex Nelson, SP-4 Billy Waid and SP-4 James ( but no one called him that) Thomas and they will NOT be forgotten.

Guts was my dog at LZ Sharon and C-2. I spent 18 months with 1/61. If anyone remembers me, please drop me a line. I've forgotten the names and faces of that time in my life.
18 months is a long time to forget.

Comments: Thanks for the links and opportunity to see names and some stories/info on the 1/61 5th Mech. I was in C/1/61 and was in country from July through much of September--6 weeks in the field and probably two weeks or more in several hospitals--Marine, Army, and Navy then to Japan. My name is Tim Hayes and I was Sgt Hayes in charge of a Fire Team, then the Squad and back to Fire Team--our Squad Leader was stung by wasps so many times that he was medevaced to a hospital ship. It was two weeks before he came back. When he did we were organizing for an operation that took place on Sept. 9th.
I cannot remeber all of the names of the men in our Squad because of the damage the mortar blast caused. I didn't know about the memory loss until I got back to the States and rejoined the 5th at Ft. Carson. The CO, out of courtesy, invited me to visit and he started asking question about the men in our B Company and my Squad. It was then that I realized almost every memory was gone including the 1/61. I have researched and gotten back some of my brothers names from the lists of KIAs but not the wounded. If anyone remebers them and knows their names I would appreciate the gift.

Comments: I just saw the log book that you are doing. I think it is great that someone is taking the time to document our deeds.
My name is Richard G. Gullion Jr, I was in Viet Nam with C/1/61 from 30 Dec 68 - 29 Dec 69. The last couple of months of my tour I was assigned to G5 with HHC because of a back wound in my 4th Lumbar region. I later was with the 5th Division at Ft Carson and worked at the Recondo School there as their Administrative NCO. I was again sent to Fort Carson with B/1/61 when they were assigned to the 4th Infantry Division from late in 1975 until I got out of the service on 26 May 77. I later joined the Texas National Guard on 16 Aug 89 and I have been on mobilization orders of one type or another since 1 Oct 01. I have worked with both the 5th US Army ( 5 May 02 - 20 Feb 06) and currently with 1st US Army from 21 Feb 06 until 29 Oct 07 with hopefully another year extension on my last set of orders to October 2008. I will be 58 years old in October and am trying to stay in until 60 when I can get retirement pay from the National Guard.
Thanks again for your fine efforts.
Also if anyone from my time in Viet Nam (C/1/61) is trying to get ahold of us give them my email address.

My unit was one of the last Marine units in Northern I Corps. I was with the DF-Section of 1st Radio Bn, USMC.
Attached are some photos from those days. In the first picture I am the one on the far left.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
PS: You've put together a great website - you should be proud.

Comments: I am the daughter of William R Hammonds (Big Daddy). I guess that was the nickname he was given in Nam. Dad was a member of the 1/11 D Co during the fall of 69 and spring of 70. He said over there ya'll called yourselves Blunt's Grunts.
Dad passed away Jan 1st 2005. I wanted to let you men know he thought of you often and tried to find some he could remember. He was mad at himself due to the fact he could only remember nicknames for many.
Dad retired with over 20 yrs in the Army. He always said the men in Nam were the best he ever served with. If anyone remembers my dad or can tell me how he got the nickname Big Daddy or anything else about him, plz email me, it would mean so much.
With much GRATITUDE

Comments: My Uncle Gil served 2 tours in Nam. He was wounded on the first and killed on the second tour on Sept. 15th 1968.
I was reading some of the narratives written by CPT Charles Vernon. He mentioned, dates from Sept 1st to the 8th in his notes. I wonder if he made any further notes on or around the date Gil and Lt. Rich was killed, 9-15-68. Where would I find these?
Later on in the web pages, mention was made about an operation named Operation Rich, named after the Lt. killed at Rocket Ridge. This was the same battle Gil was killed at.
I spoke with Carl and he knew Gil. Gil was with C Company 3rd Platoon. Can someone refer me to anyone who knew him well and was with him that final day?

Comments:Thank you for your efforts in putting up the site for 1/61. I served at Ft. Polk from October 1987-1991. My last two years were with the 105th M.I. LRSD. I started out in Bravo CO. 1/61. I honestly believed that the 'leg' grunts in the Mechanized Infantry battalions were under rated. The were well trained, well led, and highly motivated. I accompanied 1/61 with my LRSD unit for Operation Nimrod Dancer. I served as a NCO (Sgt.) during this deployment. I only wish that 1/61 had been allowed to stay a little longer to be part of Operation Just Cause. I know they would have performed well.
Thank You Again!

Comments:I found your email address through a google search. I happened upon this site when doing research about a Czech artist, J. Lauda, who drew scenes of US Army troops arriving in Pilzen, Czech Republic towards the end of WWII.
My late Father was in the 16th Armored Division and just last week, I found four postcards drawn by Mr. Lauda. On the back of two of them, my Father wrote notes such as: "These are pictures drawn by a Czech artist after we entered Pilsen" and "The funny apparatus with the smoke-stacks at the right are ?? cans with gasoline operated burners set in. These heat the water and are used to clean your mess kits."
Can you tell me anything else about these cards?

Does anyone remember that operation? We started by Alpha-4 and went north. Any memory of destroying artillery, mortars, rockets etc. I remember a bunch of your guys coming back with pith helmets and other stuff.
The guys on the 8/4 site are having a discussion on artillery that they had. Being with the Cav we got mortared and a couple of 122s rockets but by the time the second or third round would hit I would have counter battery fire going and I was always luckier than they were.

Comments:Wow!
I just spent the time to look at the site. I was in Nam July 69-70 C Company. I was a grunt, but more fortunate than most. I was a track driver and our CO (maybe under orders) sent the guys out on foot. We would drive them to their destinations which usually wasn't too far out, and drop them off for the night. Then we headed back to C2 and pulled bunker guard. I remember November 69 they were on foot almost all the time and we were REMF's skating by.
The site brought back memories of places that had lost their names-Sharon, Cua Viet, to name a few. And I got to see the "play" maps that looked unnervingly like football plays. Never gave much thought to that until now.
Thanks.

From: Jim Wittenberger - jfwitt@oliver.com

Comments:I ran across the 1/61 website almost by accident. I've been out of touch with everyone since leaving Vietnam in August 1971, but anyone serving with Charlie Company (well, I think that's right but not sure anymore) will remember me well as their somewhat offbeat but very effective FO who went around wearing beads and blowing up everything he could think of on general principles.
I remember the 122 mm rocket hit on the enlisted men's bunker May 21, 1971 well. In fact I instigated an IG investigation of the incident after it had happened by writing General Abrams in Saigon as well as my senator from California, Alan Cranston. I would have been in that bunker with the guys had it happened a day later. My recollection was that 69 were killed, not 29. Because that would have greatly upped the weekly casualty figures, the military decided to spread the number between 2 weeks, which might explain why 29 is the number reported on your website.
I also remember the mission to Khe Sanh because I missed out on it. I was in Da Nang on in-country R&R at the time that mission started and couldn't get a flight back to my unit for 10 days and I wasn't volunteering to go north with a truck convoy. I was probably one of the few who had 2 weeks R&R in one stretch during the entire war! I believe it was no coincidence that the Infantry company I was attached to was the ONLY one in the 1/61 not going to Khe Sanh since they had no FO at the time. We guarded Highway 9 and the DMZ around C2 and A4 during that operation, even after I got back to my unit.
Would love to hear from anyone who served with me.
