SUBJECT: Congratulatory Message

SEE DISTRIBUTION

The following message was received from the Commanding General, XXIV Corps and is to be passed to each member of the 3rd Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 61st Infantry.

1. During the evening of 31 December 1969, elements of the 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized), while in a night defensive position in an area 3 1/2 Kilometers southwest of Cua Viet were attacked by an unknown size enemy force. By rapid and forceful reaction and skillfull employment of sound defensive tactics, coupled with aggressive employment of supporting fires, the enemy force was soundly defeated in its attempt to penetrate the defensive position. A total of 16 enemy soldiers were killed. In addition, 11 individual and 2 crew-served weapons were captured. Friendly forces sustained two wounded.

2. Please extend to the outstanding soldiers of Cornpany A, 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 61st Infantry, my congratulations for their professional accomplishments.

1. (U) The following message from the Commanding General, III MAF, is quoted for your information and dissemination to appropriate members of your command.

QUOTE:

1. (C) The officers and men of 5th Bn, 2nd ARVN Regt and TF 1-61, 1/5 Mech are commended for their highly successful action on 31 Jan Northwest of Cam Lo. These units with the support of 3-2 ARVN, Hoc Bao Company, A-3/5 and their supporting arms elements inflicted a decisive defeat on the 1st Bn, 27th NVA Regt by killing 61 enemy, and capturing 10 POW's, 7 crew served weapons, and other assorted material.

2. (U) The skillful use of supporting arms, the close and continuing coordination and cooperation, and Quick response demonstrated by all units were instrumental in achieving this resounding success. This action sets an example for others to follow.

Please convey my admiration and congratulations to all officers and men who participated.

QUOTE:

During the period 1-5 April 1970, elements of the 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division (Mech), initiated a series of sharply executed attacks against NVA forces in the vicinity of LZ Sparrow. The oper-ation, designed to relieve enemy pressure on ARVN forces in contact in the area, aggressively carried the fight to the enemy and resulted in 61 enemy soldiers killed and the capture of one prisoner and six crew-served weapons. Friendly forces sustained moderate casualties during this operation. Please extend to the outstanding soldiers of Task force 1/61, 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division (Mech), my congratulations for a job well done.
